Our Services

Comprehensive assistive technology and independent living evaluation, education, and training services help promote our veterans’  and other clients’ abilities to fully participate in meaningful activities essential for their quality of life. Our  evaluation and intervention or treatment services focus on supercharging their abilities through effective assistive technology (AT) and independent living services & products at home, work, school, and in the community.

Computer Access Evaluations & Training

The aim of a computer, tablet, or smartphone evaluation is to identify specific assistive technology solutions that will enhance lost or limited physical, cognitive, or visual skills in order to access and use a computer, tablet, or smartphone. Assessments are conducted in the comfort of our clients’ homes or in their preferred work, school, or community setting. Beautifully designed computer education and training materials, as well as interactive computer-based tutorials are provided at no additional cost.

Community Mobility Evaluations & Training

Driving a motor vehicle is an important daily activity that facilitates independence and provides numerous functional, psychological, and physical benefits. A comprehensive driver evaluation is comprised of two key components. The first includes a clinical assessment of a client’s vision, cognition, visual perception, reaction time, strength, judgment, endurance, and other key factors that help to determine driver readiness. The clinical assessment, despite its name, can be conducted in the client’s preferred location. Once the clinical assessment has been completed an on-road assessment takes place to observe driving performance in the naturalistic environment. Recommendations for adaptive driving equipment or a graduated on-road driver training program or both are documented and shared with clients and their therapy team members. Alternative transportation to safely get around the community if driving retirement becomes necessary is also provided as a part of our comprehensive continuum of care.

Electronic Aids for Daily Living (EADL) Evaluations & Training

EADL (sometimes referred to as environmental control units or devices) enhance independence and safety at home, school, and work. With the right EADL, veterans and other clients can independently turn a light, radio, and television on and off, answer or initiate a phone call, adjust a thermostat, activate an emergency or attendant call device, and unlock and open a door, to name just a few tasks that can be accomplished! Users operate these systems by using specially designed switches, voice activation, touch sensitive screens, head pointers, or eye gaze technology.

Ergonomic Workspace Evaluations & Training

A person that does not sit correctly and strains to use a computer, tablet, smartphone, or other device to complete office-related tasks can eventually experience back, head, and neck pain as well as eyestrain. Most computer equipment and workstations are built generically to fit people of all ages and body types.  Few (if any) adjustments can be made to a “one-size-fits-all” work area. Ergonomic workspaces, on the other hand, are built on a foundation where a computer, its peripheral components, and clerical tools can be more effectively accessed and utilized. Providing clients with ergonomic task chairs, height-adjustable desks, and other ergonomic solutions lays the foundation upon which they can access computers and computer related devices such as tablets, smartphones, and clerical tools. These solutions result in significant functional gains and optimal levels of comfort, independence, and productivity.

Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCEs) & Work Hardening Programs

Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCEs) incorporate specialized physical testing designed to help determine a client’s physical capabilities, the best course of treatment, and most importantly, the ability or inability to continue or return to work in the same or different job title. In some cases, veterans and others with disabilities require additional support to successfully return to work such as modifications to the work environment (e.g., a job-site evaluation or ergonomic workstation assessment or both), assistive technology to compensate for diminished functioning (e.g., computer access evaluation and training), or participation in a dynamic work hardening program.

FCEs are performed by registered and licensed therapists with special training and expertise in this specialty practice area. The FCE is several hours long and consists of a comprehensive client interview; review of the job description and task analysis to determine physical and functional job requirements; assessment of the client’s functional capacity; and review, interpretation, and dissemination of the evaluation findings.

The FCE features a systematic process of assessing an individual’s physical capacities and functional abilities and matches human performance levels to the demands of a specific job or work activity or occupation. It also establishes the physical level of work an individual can perform and is useful in determining job placement, job accommodation, or return to work after injury or illness. FCEs can provide objective information regarding functional work ability in the determination of occupational disability status.

Home Evaluations & Redesign Consultation

There is no place like home, and that’s why it’s so important that our home environments be well-designed and allow for the greatest degree of independence, productivity, and safety. When the built environment does not accommodate an individual’s health-related changes and challenges, environmental modifications can be made to facilitate independence, health, safety, and well-being. A home modified for greater accessibility promotes prevention of injuries, functional independence, and energy conservation. It even increases the likelihood that individuals can remain at home while they age in place. We have expertise and extensive education, training, and real-world experience recommending the most cost-effective environmental modifications, durable medical and adaptive equipment, assistive technology, and activity design strategies for every room of the residence for successful outcomes.

Independent Living Skills Evaluations & Training

Independent living skills services are targeted to assist clients who require rehabilitation services to live more independently. A rehabilitation plan with the goal of independent living often requires assistive technology, independent living skills training, and assisting clients with connecting to community-based support services. We provide our clients support by working with their physicians, vocational counselors, case managers, and others to facilitate independent living evaluations and interventions. We meet our clients in the comfort of their homes or alternate location of their choosing to learn about factors that are impeding their independence, safety, health, and well-being. We assess a client’s ability to perform basic and/or advanced daily activities, formulate interventions, and identify adaptive and durable medical equipment, as well as, assistive technology designed to increase their independence, safety, health and wellness, and quality of life.

Job-site Evaluations & Redesign Consultation

We have the expertise and training required to assess work environments and recommend & implement strategies that help our clients complete their work tasks more effectively & efficiently. Additionally, Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCEs) are often conducted in conjunction with job-site assessments to create a more comprehensive picture of a worker’s functional challenges and abilities. These strategies ultimately help to ensure that individuals secure or maintain employment and work independently with maximum job satisfaction and security.
